The Door Into Whimsy (Western Gate Books, March 2020) is an exciting fantasy novel for children written and lavishly illustrated by H.F. Clarke. In these days of uncertainty, perhaps a little escape is okay for all the kids in us, regardless of age.
From Bramble to Castle Mayfair, Tyler Wordsmith, a young boy, encounters the ogre of Old Oak Valley, a trio of nasty trolls guarding the troll bridge into October, and a grumpy ruckus who just wants a nap–to name a few of the odd creatures inhabiting Whimsy. It falls to Tyler to stop a hateful creature (a creature Tyler knows only too well) from destroying the neighboring kingdoms of October and Autumn. Along the way, Tyler learns the value–and wisdom–of mastering his words and his temper.
At 156 pages (hardcover edition) with illustrations in full color and adorned with a lively dust jacket including a detailed map of Whimsy on the back cover, this should delight kids of all ages, with the reading level suggested at age 8 and up, or grade 4 and up.
